Post Graduate Diploma in First Contact, Nurse Prescriber

I am an experienced nurse having worked in a hospital setting, in the community and in general practice. I have had extra training providing me with the necessary skills and knowledge to work as a Nurse Practitioner. I am able to assess, diagnose and prescribe. I see many patients with minor illnesses thereby allowing GPs to spend more time on complex medical issues and work closely with them to provide care for Lakeside’s patients.

I have an interest in what is known as ‘Long Term Conditions’: This includes Hypertension, Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease, Coronary Heart Disease and Diabetes. Working alongside the Practice Nurses I help to monitor and advise patients with these conditions.

I am keen to provide an educational and health promotional role in order to help patients look after their own health.

The main aspects of my role include:-

• Assessing and treating patients independently
• Providing health education
• Managing minor illnesses
• Chronic disease management
• Undertaking physical examinations
• Screening and monitoring of diseases.

I’m Ruth, a new Nurse Practitioner working at the Practice. I started working here in January this year. I have 20 years of primary care experience, and have worked as a Practice Nurse for 16 years.

In 2004 I started my Nurse Practitioner degree and in 2007 completed my prescribing qualification.
